AuntyLisa'sBeloveds: Prompt #1

In Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" the protagonist, Ender Wiggin leaves home at the age of six to go and spend the rest of his childhood at an "International Fleet" space station where he is to be trained to fight against alien "buggers" in a war to save the planet Earth from their invasion. When Ender leaves home he leaves behind an older brother and sister named Peter and Valentine. The two are foils to each other, but together they complete the character that is Ender Wiggin. All three of the Wiggin children are geniuses and wise beyond their years and each of Ender's siblings symbolizes an extreme in his own personality: Valentine as the good, and Peter as the evil.
Ender's older sister, Valentine is the only member of his family that truly cares for Ender, and shows no disdain towards him. She plays a similar role to a guardian angel and loves him more like a mother would than a sister. When Peter torments him, Valentine consoles him. While Ender grows to abhor Peter, he grows that much more to love Valentine. Throughout the novel Ender shows himself several times to be a reflection of his siblings. Valentine symbolizes the good in Ender. The only time he is happy is when he thinks about her. Ender uses his sister as a means to staying good and not letting his darker side manifest for fear of becoming like his brother.
Peter is Ender's antagonist. Ender is reminded constantly of the things that peter did to him when he still lived on Earth. Whenever Ender is forced to use physical contact to defend himself (a scenario which always ends with him brutally defeating his opponent and in some cases killing them) he reminds himself that he is becoming more like Peter and hates himself because of it. Ender makes a point in the novel of not becoming like his brother and runs away in his mind to the thought of Valentine whenever a situation arises where he might act the way his brother would. Peter symbolizes the evil in Ender.
Throughout the novel Ender grows more and more conscious of the fact that he reflects the behavior of his brother and sister, and there comes a point when he sets out not to reflect either one of them. But one thing is for sure: Valentine and Peter together are Ender Wiggin and the more he tried to avoid becoming more like one and less like the other, the more he realized that the only way he would truly be good is when he began to be himself.

  1. Very good, Tux! I like it. I agree with Peter symbolizing the evil in Ender. I loooove this book!! You should read Speaker for the Dead! I also liked how you analyzed Ender's character, and how he realized that he should just be himself, and stop trying to be his brother!

  2. Kiara,

I really liked the fact that rather than using objects as symbols, you used actual characters. I think that made your essay very unique. I didn't think about characters being symbols because they are usually the ones that the symbols affect. I also liked how you showed the direct affect those symbols had on Ender. I think you did a really good job :)

  3. Kiara!
You made this book seem really interesting. I liked your character analyzation for Ender, it gave a good underlying message or moral: to just be yourself. I think I wanna read it now! haha

But it was kinda hard for me to read your essay cuz there were no like breaks or pauses in the essay, so my eyes like went crazy reading the sea of white words against the black background. But it was kinda cool, cuz it was like an optical illusion. haha
But good job, I really liked this. :D

  4. I'm like Leelynn, and I love love loved it that you didn't use objects as your symbols but people! Normally people don't realize that characters are symbols too so GREAT idea! My only problem with it was that it didn't have the essay structure, you know there weren't any paragraphs or anything but besides that it was good! =)

  5. Kiara!
I loved Ender's Game! :) I really liked how you used Ender's siblings as symbolism and connected them to Ender as a person. I liked how you showed how Ender's two siblings make up his split personality, and how he becomes more aware of this as the book goes on. :)

  6. Kiara, An excellent attempt. Yes!!! Characters CAN be symbols!!!! You would have done a stronger job if you had done proper essay structure!!! You don't want to confuse or have your readers have to "work" to read your essay! Make it as easy as possible for them to like it and give you high points!!! In the intro you should have added that you have to see both of the siblings as one since they make up Ender himself! That would have driven home your thesis! Keep this up! Keep this rolling! BTW: ASWR #3: It was fine, but I know that you could have made this great!!! You could have included some of your poetry to make it unique! I heard you say that your talent is the arts, but you didn't SHOW me that!!! I expect you to consistently paint pictures in our minds! Go for it!!!!
